June 2018 Update
With the release of TH12, there was a slew of balance changes across the board. Even though there were new defensive turret levels added and damages changed, the biggest change of all was to war weight. Supercell finally realized that savvy chiefs all over were waiting to unlock the big defenses you unlock with a new town hall. Starting with X-Bows at TH9, to Inferno Towers at TH10, and then biggest culprit of all, the Eagle Artillery at TH11.
To give you a sense of perspective of how drastic this balancing change was, here are a few examples of some big changes.
1. Eagle Artillery went from 5700 at level 1 to only 500! That's a 91% reduction
2. Wizard Towers weight has reduced by 66%
3. X-Bows weight also reduced by 66%
Now, some defenses had their weight slightly increased, like the Hidden Tesla, but mostly what this change does is encourage players to drop that big shiny brand new special super building they unlock when their town hall finally upgrades. So this got me thinking about how to prioritize upgrading them and this is the method I came up with.

Utility Ratio = War Weight / DPS
It's very simple really, the lower the ratio the more bang for your buck you get every upgrade. Now there are a couple rules I would suggest following.
1. Upgrade/Unlock all offensive buildings first
- i.e. Army Camps, Clan Castle, Barracks, etc.
3. Max each turret of that type before moving on to the next rank down
- i.e. all Air Defenses maxed before moving onto Hidden Teslas
Now keeping all that in mind, here is the upgrade priority list. I separated Inferno Towers by single and multi target to highlight the fact that you should all be setting your Infernos to single target. But more to come on that in a future article. The final ratio is an average of the utility ratio across all levels for that defensive building. So this list is true for each town hall level, no matter your situation. It's like I've been preaching for a long time, you should all upgrade your walls to max, followed by your Air Defenses. Air Defenses still come in at #2 even though they had their weight significantly increased this update. Anyway, like I said make sure to upgrade each one of the buildings you have before moving onto the next rank down i.e. all X-Bows before Archer Towers. Do this until they are maxed for your town hall level and then repeat after you upgrade. |
I hope this sheds a little light on how you should be planning your upgrades and gold usage--I know you guys have been asking for this for awhile and I thought given the fresh town hall release would be a perfect opportunity. As always, let me know if you guys have any questions and stay spooky.
